* '''05.07.23:''' A dice roll number on performances will now only display if you have the combat_ooc toggle configured to be on. (Extrapolating how willing a player is to get numerical dice values thrown at them in the middle of roleplay.) Prompt indicators have been updated: if the screenreader is toggled on, roundtime-in-progress will be indicated by the word "Busy" while readiness to act will be shown by the word "Ready". General state will be mentioned, if configured to show, with "You are in good shape", "You are in middling shape", and "You are in bad shape". Many colors have been reworked for higher contrast to suit vision-impaired players, and there are now color themes that can be configured in the settings. "High contrast" will be the default theme, but the old theme is accessible via the "muted" option. It is also now possible to configure more color options, for things, tells, exits, and weather. Having the screenreader toggled on can now affect the display of some in-game objects (analyzing written works, for example, or tells in emotes). If you create a new character with the screenreader option on, the default prompt configurations will be different (to read something like "You are in good shape and ready.").

Song of Avaria is a text-based roleplaying game that incorporates both MUD- and MUSH-like features to create a dynamic storytelling experience in an intricate and expansive fantasy world.

SoA is set in the vast land of Avaria, a roughly Earth-like world with a host of cultures and countries spanning a large globe. Geopolitics and religion mix with magic and adventure to create a realm full of possibilities, where player characters can pursue a huge range of goals limited only by their own imagination. Whether a pious priest, a bold knight of the realm, a canny entrepreneur, a climbing socialite, a studious researcher, a street thug with ambitions, or simply an ordinary peasant or citizen with dreams of something grander, Avaria offers a stage for characters to play out their own personal stories with one another against a vast backdrop of history in the making.

We are currently in Alpha Phase, so please read about the starting experience there. General information can be found on the Setting page or under the Lore links.

  • Stealing from Bandits: It's common knowledge that the Sharizaar Road, like most routes through the desert wilds, has its share of perils and problems -- like the bandit camps scattered through the upper reaches of the Sharizaar Massif. But recently word has trickled back to Omrazir of one of those robber camps being robbed itself! [More]
  • Stormy Summer: For a place that doesn't normally see much rain in the summer, it's been an unusually stormy season in Omrazir. Local pagans wonder if Nirzali is showering the city with her favor, or if she's thundering with displeasure... [More]

Development Updates

  • 01.04.23: The present-day game time has been rolled back a couple years, some conversion bugs have been fixed, and unit tests are now in place for time conversion functions, to hopefully ensure that time conversion is consistent and correct.
  • 01.03.23: Jalanit has been added as a language, and some chargen language bugs have been fixed. When sniffing the air, you will now be nose-blind to your own personal scent (this was spammy). A few broken commands have been fixed (STOP, FLEE). Posts with links are possible again on the forums.
  • 12.31.23: A "fold" is now an adjustable part that can be raised or lowered to hide one's identity in a garment. This might be applicable to things like blankets and marzuqs. SWAP and SWITCH are now commands that work (again) with handling objects.
  • 12.29.23: Combat code has been substantially slimmed down and is still in the process of a gradual rewrite. In-game help files for commands will now show extra information: what emote customizations they can be used with, related files if any are recommended, and what type of command they are in the sense of the conditions required for them. Additionally, a brand new command has been added: WEATHER HISTORY. This way you know what the weather was all day, even if you were offline, and you won't accidentally tell your friends that you were out on a nice picnic when it was icily raining all day!

The original concept for Song of Avaria came about in 2016, and its adaptation as a MU* began in 2020. It is founded on the Evennia Creation System and is actively in development. Currently the game is in alpha phase and registration is temporarily closed, but it is expected to re-open once the current application and bug queue are cleared.
