From an in-character standpoint, death in Avaria is permanent and ultimately unavoidable. Everyone is expected to die eventually, whether from injury, sickness, accident, or simply old age. It is also assumed that each individual will die only once, except for those cultures that believe in reincarnation into an entirely different body. While people may debate the nature and ultimate fate of the soul, it is generally believed that all souls must at least pass through the Otherland, even if this may not be their final destination.

The gameplay perspective on death is similar, in that death is generally a singular and final event in a character's life. But while death in Avaria is essentially permadeath, it is generally a fate that characters can avoid if their player doesn't wish to end their story that way.
