Description

Peacocks always have presence, though they are not necessarily as flamboyant as their namesake. Though many do like to dress well and show off their style, others are more striking in different modes of expression, whether speech, song, or art. They in fact have a knack for making anything into an art, and less conventional Peacocks may be anything from cooks to thieves. Peacocks thrive when their art, whatever it may be, is in the spotlight, for although not all crave notice for their own person, they have a deep need for their artistry to be seen and appreciated by others. Even the quietest Peacock is said to have a certain presence that makes people take notice, and even the humblest Peacock longs for recognition of their art.

Although creative, Peacocks can be overly sensitive to criticism, which is more likely to make them defensive rather than motivating them to change their thinking or behavior. A Peacock will often double down on their poor style or bad behavior rather than make a single change for the sake of a critic. They may in fact be deeply discouraged and hurt by the criticism, but their pride prevents them from making any concessions regarding their vision of themselves and their art. However, they can persuaded to accept constructive criticism if it is presented by someone they love or esteem, and given in such a way as to minimize the ruffling of their feathers. Peacocks can act in ways that seem selfish or vindictive, chiefly in perceived self-defense, but their temperament is not a cruel one by nature.

Though at their worst they are self-absorbed and vain, Peacocks can have an impulsive kindness towards others and may be quite generous with themselves and their possessions. They like to take others under their wing and help them achieve their full creative potential, as this allows them to show off their own talents as well as to nurture others and their gifts. As a result they can be good teachers and generous mentors -- although they may struggle with envy if a pupil threatens to outshine them by too far.

The Consonant Peacock

The Peacock's consonance shows in their single-minded devotion to whatever art or craft they consider their own. They are very much driven to excel and to shine in their favored mode of expression, and they become sullen and melancholy when they go ignored. Although they thrive on praise and applause, a Peacock would far rather be the object of controversy and condemnation than be ignored or go unnoticed entirely. While they may seem flighty in their behavior, they are quite focused on what truly matters to them most.

The Peacock in the Heavens

The body of the Peacock is formed by a small triangle of three relatively dim stars, so that the constellation is dominated by its long twelve-star tail trailing across the night sky. Although the shape of the Peacock's tail is closed rather than spread, it makes a cascade of shimmering stars whose colors are in fact reminiscent of peacock plumes. It is best seen in the winter, reaching its zenith in the eighth month of Oniris.
