The WHISPER command allows you to communicate privately with another person in your immediate vicinity. It also allows you to speak in a whisper without a target. Whispers have a chance of being overhead by other people in the same vicinity. You can also use the companion command WHISPERMOTE (alias WMOTE or HMOTE) to perform subtle actions that can only be seen by the target person.

Both WHISPER and WHISPERMOTE are IC; if you need to whisper an OOC message to somebody, use OOCWHISPER.

Usage

WHISPER <message>
You whisper, "Nobody will ever notice me here."

WHISPER to <person> <message>
You whisper to Waraqa, "I think someone has been stealing books from the back room of the bazaar. You should go take a look."

WHISPER to <direction>
You whisper to an ironwood door, "You can come in now, the coast is clear."

WHISPERMOTE <action>
(Hidden) You have emoted: Nemi fiddles surreptitiously with her rings.

WHISPERMOTE to <person> <action>

Notes

  • People who are in your immediate vicinity will be more likely to hear whispers, but anyone can see that you're whispering regardless of your respective positions in the room. and might overhear something. they will see fully any actions within
  • Only the people in your immediate vicinity will see a whispermote, as an immediate vicinity person is someone in direct physical contact or very nearly so. Depending on their acuity, people in your general vicinity might see it, too. You can use it for subtle tells or secretive gestures such as a squeeze while hugging someone.
  • You can use any of these emotes with 'to', in order to whispermote to someone particularly. Anyone in your immediate vicinity will see a whispermote, but instigating a whisper towards someone -- when you are not in their immediate vicinity -- will move you there, and take your balance. If you don't want to stay "touching" someone, you may wish to politely distance a step after whispering.
  • When you whisper to a direction, you need to be standing in the vicinity of that direction, and need to use "to" in your syntax: whisper to <direction>. The only people who will be able to hear you decently are people who are standing at the vicinity of that return exit in the other room.
