I'll see about getting a forge area set up in the Otherland, as it's something people have been asking for a while, and being able to spawn in some common crafting materials.   :toolbox:   :swaggalicious:

Fun times in the arena! I decided I would jot down what I remembered from last night for notes so this wasn't always and entirely on Ighlaf. I definitely missed a lot though so please feel free to add/edit.

'BUGS', MAYBE

* Tinkering's fix command cannot seem to repair clothing items past 99% or remove the "This item is old and battered" text. Mend in tailoring works fine, however. I think it's probably fine that fix can't repair items all the way, but the old and battered tag persisting at 99% fixed seems off. Maybe it would make sense to let fix have a messier message than mend but still suffice for this?

* Armor weighs 1 million pounds; specifically, a full plate cuirass is 122 lbs (!).

* Armor probably isn't working as intended; even full plate only mildly reduces damage (turned a 769 damage attack to iirc 448 damage, with high armor skill), and lesser armor didn't seem to do much to reduce damage at all.

* Not super important, but you get some odd grammar with pieces of armor that should be in pairs ("A detailed steel fullplate pauldrons", for example, or for the chausses/vambraces.)

* Dropping an iron ingot turned its short description to "A scrappy patch of fur". It still functioned as an iron ingot and the long desc was fine, though.

* You can end up with "a leathery leather armor" when creating leather armor. Which isn't WRONG, per se, but.

LESSONS LEARNED

* Peppermint oil at least doesn't change the stat boosts from a massage. I dimly seem to recall lavender oil does (either adds Composure or changes the stat mod to Composure) but we couldn't test that in the arena, as only peppermint oil can be loaded.

* People tested making locks and keys for metal chests and it totally worked, which was cool, but iirc I think you needed a separate skill (Construction?) to actually put the lock in the chest, which was weird.

* A lot of smithing testing! I recall folks looked at the impact of material type on final weapon stats and the results seemed complicated; going to let the people who actually tested that fill in, though, because I was sleepy.

* I'm not sure the actual weight limit of a container always matters, or is it the top weight limit of a single item? I put SO much weight into a wardrobe despite it saying it topped out at 400lbs.

ARENA WISH LIST

* A sawmill to make planks - though I just noticed 'ashwood planks' in the main list of items so maybe this is less necessary;

* With the current separation of items in the arena load options list, I would change the following:
----- Scrap cloth/metal/leather/fur/iron ingots are double-listed in both items and materials, if that matters;
----- Move to materials: fabric, linen fabric, silk fabric, ashwood planks
----- Move to ingredients: Aloe, plaintain, frankincense, myrrh, rose muisk, moss, maybe peppermint oil

* If possible, even more separation of the arena load options list? I'd add 'weapons/armor', 'clothing', 'tools', 'art' (including music), and 'containers', probably, to break up the block of items. I'd be happy to do the actual sorting rather than just selfishly asking for it if desired!

* New items to load:
----- Other oils to test massage;
----- A mop to clean up the hemorrhoid ointment I threw at Lefty. Sorry not sorry.

Thanks to Ighlaf for organizing and the staff for creating something as cool as the arena to play around in!

Can I please request one of the arena rooms be flagged a Garden if one isn't already so I can test some Gardening stuffs in the future.

I'm feeling distractible this morning so I explored around and: as far as I can tell, no garden room, so this'd be a great addition.

Thank you for writing that up. And far as a mop, hold any cloth object and water and input "clean here" to clean a room.

A dream of the forest just south of the arena does allow planting (just tested that)

The install locks was only available to the carpenter, I feel it would make more sense for the locksmith to be able on the wood and metal chests instead. Or all three have the ability.

Things I learned: throwing someone at an exit sends them through to the next room

I SWEAR I tried clean here and it didn't work in the grid but now you've got me questioning reality. Maybe I just didn't have water...

Just wanted to thank pof Ighlaf for organizing this, pof Kamenes for the lovely and extremely detailed write-up of the testing yesterday, and staff for enabling our testing through the great arena and new materials added! I thought I'd share a bit more specifics on the smithing testing, and the armor testing.

Smithing Testing

One of the things we were experimenting with was the mixture of materials used in say, a sword, and the impact on the stats (weight, damage, speed, etc). Some results: (please excuse if the formatting is bleh!)

Sword Test 1: Medium Sword, Steel Hilt, Steel Ingots

Specific mixture: steel hilt (2 steel ingots, 1 leather strap) + 12 steel ingots (for the sword)

OOC (Dice): finesse + smithing - 74
OOC (Dice): strength + smithing - 128
a well-made steel longsword: Damage Types: cutting
(metal, steel, stabber, cutter, skill:medium swordsNone medium sword)
Weight: 8.0 pounds     Ranges: general (100 percent effective)  immediate (70 percent effective)
Accuracy Mod: 100%, Speed Mod: 110.00000000000001%, Damage Mod: 254.99999999999997%

Sword Test 2: Medium Sword, Steel Hilt, Mixture of Ingots

Specific mixture: steel hilt (2 steel ingots, 1 leather strap) + the blade itself (4 steel ingots, 8 iron ingots)

OOC (Dice): finesse + smithing - 66
OOC (Dice): strength + smithing - 97
a well-made steel longsword: Damage Types: cutting
(metal, steel, stabber, cutter, skill:medium swordsNone medium sword)
Weight: 12.0 pounds     Ranges: general (100 percent effective)  immediate (70 percent effective)
Accuracy Mod: 100%, Speed Mod: 110.00000000000001%, Damage Mod: 254.99999999999997%

Sword Test 3: Medium Sword, Steel Hilt, Iron Ingots

Specific mixture: steel hilt (2 steel ingots, 1 leather strap) + the blade itself (12 iron ingots)

OOC (Dice): finesse + smithing - 99
OOC (Dice): strength + smithing - 73
a beautiful iron longsword: Damage Types: cutting
(metal, stabber, iron, cutter, skill:medium swordsNone medium sword)
Weight: 6 pounds     Ranges: general (100 percent effective)  immediate (70 percent effective)
Accuracy Mod: 100%, Speed Mod: 100%, Damage Mod: 170.0%

So in each case, the two steel variations didn't have any obvious impact other than weight. Ironically, the iron which should be heavier weighed the least of all (only 6 pounds), and had worse stats (which makes sense, given iron over steel).

Thoughts we had from this testing:

  • There should probably be more of a variation to the stats as the 'mixture' of materials changes. Otherwise, there's a bit of a meta where you can 'game' a recipe for the bare minimum steel needed to have steel-stats and still count as a steel blade (though to be fair, you do pay the weight cost)
  • Longswords probably weigh a bit too much. Eight pounds for a steel longsword is a bit more than what it should be, from some cursory research. (Averages going from 2-4 pounds, and if we're talking a typical saif or a scimitar, more like 1-2 pounds).

We then moved on from swords to get into armor testing, as pof Kamenes pointed out.

Armor

We didn't explore variations here, but had a go at making some steel full plate and decking one of us out in it. The armor rating of 40 in some areas (covered for example by chausses and faulds) was super impressive! However, in our testing, we didn't notice a meaningful difference to the damage dealt when struck in an area with an armor rating of 40.

I don't have the stats of the attacking player, but here's some comparisons of damage dealt with an armor of 20, 40, and then at the end, without any armor at all. (Obviously, rolls being rolls, so take this with a grain of salt)

Test 1: Attacked in the Chest, with 20 Armor, But 0 Armor Skill

20:32:42.323 The excellent person shifts aggressively towards you.
20:32:42.323 Combat OOC: -Writing Break- the excellent person has started a physical altercation!
20:32:42.323         (You may enter 'continue' to skip the break, or 'wait' to extend the break if you need.)
20:32:42.323 The excellent person draws a beautiful steel longsword back and jabs towards your chest.
20:32:42.323 OOC (Dice): composure + footwork - 59
20:32:42.323 The stab clashes harshly into a detailed steel fullplate cuirass over your chest.
20:32:42.323 Blood begins gushing from your chest.
20:32:42.323 Combat OOC: the excellent person attacked you!
20:32:42.323 Roundtime: 28  Accuracy: 424  Dodge: 129 Block: 160  Damage: 769.
20:32:42.323 - Health: 62%% - Will: 96%% - Endurance: 100%% -  *bleeding*

Test 2: Attacked in the Chest, with 20 Armor, Armor Skill of 10

20:36:27.148 Combat OOC: -Writing Break- the excellent person has started a physical altercation!
20:36:27.148         (You may enter 'continue' to skip the break, or 'wait' to extend the break if you need.)
20:36:27.148 The excellent person draws a beautiful steel longsword back and jabs towards your chest.
20:36:27.148 OOC (Dice): composure + footwork - 46
20:36:27.148 The stab clashes heavily into a detailed steel fullplate cuirass over your chest.
20:36:27.148 Blood begins flowing from your chest.
20:36:27.148 Combat OOC: the excellent person attacked you!
20:36:27.148 Roundtime: 40  Accuracy: 257  Dodge: 122 Block: 167  Damage: 448.
20:36:27.149 - Health: 78%% - Will: 96%% - Endurance: 100%% -  *bleeding*

At first, we were fairly convinced the lower damage was because of the Armor skill, and we did also notice that this attack took more of the attacker's endurance (66%; the prior attacks were 50%).

However, some more testing confused us, since we added more armor...

Test 3: Attacked in the Groin, 40 Armor, Armor Skill of 10

In this test, we decided to attack the groin only partially for the amusement factor, but also because the chausses and faulds covered this part, giving a combined armor rating of 40. The assumption was SIGNIFICANT protection. However...

20:53:26.761 Combat OOC: -Writing Break- the excellent person has started a physical altercation!
20:53:26.761         (You may enter 'continue' to skip the break, or 'wait' to extend the break if you need.)
20:53:26.761 The excellent person draws a well-made steel longsword back and jabs towards your groin.
20:53:26.761 OOC (Dice): composure - 35
20:53:26.761 OOC (Dice): will - 16
20:53:26.761 OOC (Dice): grace - 31
20:53:26.761 You waver for a second, but your legs have turned to jelly and you fall to the the ground on both knees.
20:53:26.761 OOC (Dice): composure + footwork - 68
20:53:26.761 In close quarters, the stab connects with a heavy whack against an impeccable steel fullplate chausses and a beautiful steel fullplate faulds over your groin.
20:53:26.761 Blood begins gushing from your groin.
20:53:26.761 Combat OOC: the excellent person attacked you!
20:53:26.761 Roundtime: 33  Accuracy: 400  Dodge: 129 Block: 161  Damage: 708.
20:53:26.761 OOC (Dice): composure - 35
20:53:26.762 OOC (Dice): will - 47
20:53:26.762 OOC (Dice): grace - 47
20:53:26.762 You almost begin to sag, but pull yourself together through sheer force of will.
20:53:26.762 - Health: 49%% - Will: 96%% - Endurance: 100%% -  *bleeding*  *traumatized*

We repeated this test; though, for this repeat, the armor was damaged and the rating was only 39, and the attacker was double-wielding the longsword.

20:56:57.264 The excellent person draws a well-made steel longsword back and jabs towards your groin.
20:56:57.264 OOC (Dice): composure - 32
20:56:57.264 OOC (Dice): will - 40
20:56:57.264 OOC (Dice): grace - 31
20:56:57.264 You waver for a second, but your legs have turned to jelly and you fall to the the ground on both knees.
20:56:57.265 OOC (Dice): composure + footwork - 55
20:56:57.265 The stab clashes harshly into an impeccable steel fullplate chausses and a beautiful steel fullplate faulds over your groin.
20:56:57.265 Blood begins gushing from your groin.
20:56:57.265 Combat OOC: the excellent person attacked you!
20:56:57.265 Roundtime: 26  Accuracy: 380  Dodge: 132 Block: 163  Damage: 816.
20:56:57.265 OOC (Dice): composure - 32
20:56:57.265 OOC (Dice): will - 30
20:56:57.265 OOC (Dice): grace - 40
20:56:57.265 Your frame involuntarily slackens.
20:56:57.265 - Health: 41%% - Will: 96%% - Endurance: 100%% -  *bleeding*  *traumatized*

Test 4: Attacked in the Groin, 0 Armor, Armor Skill of 10

Then, we did one more test without any armor at all, to compare numbers. (so zero armor rating here!)

21:00:05.202 The excellent person draws a well-made steel longsword back and jabs towards your groin.
21:00:05.202 OOC (Dice): composure - 20
21:00:05.202 OOC (Dice): will - 23
21:00:05.202 OOC (Dice): grace - 24
21:00:05.202 You waver for a second, but your legs have turned to jelly and you fall to the the ground on both knees.
21:00:05.202 OOC (Dice): composure + footwork - 40
21:00:05.202 The stab clashes harshly into a wizrah of plain white cotton over your groin.
21:00:05.202 Blood begins gushing from your groin.
21:00:05.202 Combat OOC: the excellent person attacked you!
21:00:05.203 Roundtime: 27  Accuracy: 350  Dodge: 144 Block: 170  Damage: 808.
21:00:05.203 OOC (Dice): composure - 27
21:00:05.203 OOC (Dice): will - 34
21:00:05.203 OOC (Dice): grace - 27
21:00:05.203 Your frame involuntarily slackens.
21:00:05.203 - Health: 39%% - Will: 96%% - Endurance: 100%% -  *bleeding*  *traumatized*

Some summary notes:

  • As pof Kamenes wrote, fullplate armor weighs a lot. And of course it should, but the cuirass alone was 122 pounds. In fact, the total breakdown of the armor we made:
    • Cuirass: 122.0 pounds
    • Chausses: 83.199 pounds
    • Vambraces: 41.199
    • Pauldrons: 41.199
    • Faulds: 41.8
    • Meaning a full set (excluding gauntlets and a helmet which I didn't make) would weigh ~330 pounds. This should probably get reduced to something like... ~50-60 pounds?
  • Maybe our understanding of the system is broken or there was something else at play that we didn't consider, but we were surprised how little the armor helped, or in some ways didn't help at all. Given how expensive a suit of metal armor is to make, I suspect this isn't working as expected.

I think that's it from my side! If I think of any other notes to post I'll throw 'em here.

Again, thank you so much to pof Ighlaf for organizing, the other players for participating, and staff for adding the materials that allowed us to do this fun testing. We had a really great time and I don't think I can fully express the group's excitement at chests and locks :D (Really, it was all the rage)
