Nearing the end of midwinter, many of the residents of St Loomis are quite hungry. Even the lifestock are said to be suffering this year, as an early unexpected frost blighted much of the later feed crop. Shopkeepers complain of gaunt guards 'confiscating' bags of flour due to 'suspicion of seraphim contamination' (much to the disapproval of the virtuous Mistwatch), and raggedy pickpockets wait on street corners and in the market square.
