"Some of the more night-owl denizens of St. Loomis report having seen a couple of those shipwrecked foreigners, that burly apprentice of Otty Smythe's, and the huge dark woman with the scarred face, walking through the streets together late at night carrying a big crag-pine log. Some curious ones followed, and said they took it to the Silver Street Wagonyard. What kind of new foreign devil nonsense is this, dragging logs through the city streets late at night? Apparently the smith was heard to say something about "mine supports," but nobody can really fathom what those strange people are actually up to. Probably no good."
